The Minnesota Critical Care Collaborative is home to a vibrant and expansive research community spanning basic science, translational investigations, and multicenter clinical trials. As a leading R1 institution and major transplant and resuscitation center, we bring together interdisciplinary teams to advance the science and practice of critical care medicine.
Our research portfolio includes groundbreaking work in resuscitation science, extracorporeal life support (ECMO), organ transplantation, acute respiratory failure, sepsis, and trauma care. Flagship programs like the Center for Resuscitation Medicine and the Translational Center for Resuscitative Trauma Care drive innovation in both laboratory discovery and bedside intervention.

The Center for Resuscitation Medicine is a virtual, interdisciplinary center at the University of Minnesota Medical School with the goal to advance research, education, and community engagement in the field of resuscitation medicine. The center is a first-of-its-kind center in the US dedicated to innovative research, world-class training, and clinical leadership to improve outcomes for sudden cardiac arrest.
The center is also home to the Minnesota Mobile Resuscitation Consortium (MMRC) which has a mission to implement a rapid response medical strategy to provide Minnesota the highest survival in the world from OHCA.
The Translational Center for Resuscitative Trauma Care was created in 2022 to help improve critical care for rural patients and those in military combat. The goal of the center is to improve care for Minnesota trauma patients and future military combatants by conducting translational research for points of care such as point of injury, wound management, infection prevention, rural trauma care, resuscitation, and prehospital care.
The Common Longitudinal ICU data Format (CLIF) consortium unites clinicians, data scientists, and institutions committed to accelerating critical-care research through standardized, privacy-preserving data structures. The consortium combines deep clinical expertise with state-of-the-art data engineering and AI research.
The Clinical Quality, Outcomes, Discovery, and Evaluation Core (CQODE) within the Center for Learning Health System Sciences aims to democratize data access for clinical researchers to improve healthcare quality and delivery. They create pathways for data-centric research that enhances healthcare quality and delivery. By democratizing healthcare data access, they empower clinical and non-clinical researchers to share resources, achieve economies of scale and accelerate new projects that drive faster evaluation, insights and discovery.
The Minnesota Critical Care Outcomes Research Effort (MNCCORE) is comprised of researchers from the Departments of Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Institute for Health Informatics with a mission to improve care for the critically ill. They accomplish it through outcomes research while also fostering an environment dedicated to mentoring and inspiring trainees with research interests.
